Reader 8.0 will not show buttons on form created with Acrobat 5

I'm working with many PDFs that contain fill-in fields and submit buttons that were created with Acrobat 5. With the introduction of Reader 8.0, the highlighted fields and save/submit/reset buttons on the forms do not appear. Can someone explain this?
