Should Adobe Reader 8 read down to Acrobat 6?

I am creating a file in Publisher and then converting it to a PDF with Acrobat 6 (I know I'm behind). When we share it, some people are able to open it just fine, while others get only a blank screen. I believe at least one of those with a blank screen has Reader 8. Does Reader 8 read down to previous versions (I assume it would, but then it's not really safe to assume...)? If so, does anyone have an idea how else I might be able to help these people get the documents open on their computers?

I can also bite the bullet and purchase the upgrade, but how will that affect those who can currently view the document? Any help is much appreciated - this is my first time here.
