Richard-this is an unusual one indeed. I am wondering (out loud) whether some computer builders have actually locked various settings. If you build from scratch, as I do, then you do not have the usual Recovery Disc to original setup. Instead, you go thru a full install. This appears to be something that Adobe needs to address along with Microsoft and the major vendors. MY HP laptop (ze5570us) is fine as is my custom desktop machine. As I have said before-I did a "clean" install of Reader 8 having completely removed everything I could find on the Desktop machine (XP Pro SP2). I then did the same to the laptop. I know this does not answer the question you ask. MY choices for Registry cleaning include Crap Cleaner and Ashampoo WinOptimizer. I have packed up Norton Systemworks and will never use it again as a suite; we all know by now what it says via WinDoctor.
