The thread describes my problem. Turning off video acceleration solved the problem, but left my video much too slow. The v7 download that thread links to will not install on my PC. I uninstalled v8, but the v7 install will not run on my PC. It says "the upgrade patch cannot be installed by Windows Installer". What about my other issue, the Navigation Panel Buttons? I am very, very disappointed by Adobe. And now I also don't have a PDF reader.
