How about if you try to view a local PDF document - does it also go through the install process?

I also have WinXP-SP2, Firefox 2.0.0.1, and Adobe Reader 8, but I do not get the problem you describe. It could be a profile issue with Firefox, but I am not sure.

If I had that problem I would first try to delete all Firefox profiles (after making a backup, of course), the create a new one. See <http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager>.

If that doesn't work, I would uninstall both Firefox and Adobe Reader, then reinstall them.
