Once again the solution, at least for USA users, is to completely uninstall ALL old versions of Adobe Reader. This includes cleaning the entries from the Registry that are Adobe Reader (versions 5-8)related. You do not have to remove anything else. Then you should download the full version (~20.8meg's) of Reader 8 (without the free add-on). Install should run just fine. This also assumes that you have shut down ALL anti-virus, spyware, malware programs before you begin this process. If you elect to manually remove the entries from the Registry-you do so at your own risk!!! Make a backup and a Restore Point. If anything, Adobe will ask you to let it restart the computer at some point, if necessary.
