Adobe 8 conversion all PDF files now have Word Icon please help!

I upgraded to the newest version of Adobe 8 reader and when that was completed all of my previous .pdf files had a Word icon instead of the Adobe icon. When I try to open them by clicking on the file a window pops up saying "file conversion - select encoding that makes document readable." Below that is a bunch of random symbols and characters which I assume is supposed to be the readable text. All the old PDF files still have the .PDF designation, but with the Word icon. The only way I can open PDF files now is to start Adobe Reader and then open the file through open file feature. Can someone please point me in the right direction....Do you have any ideas?
