Which is best Adobe Reader version?

I have just completed a reformat of my laptop because I was having so much trouble with Adobe. My last working version was 7.0. I tried to upgrade to 7.0.8 and then everything just quit. I was unable to delete the 7.08 download and was unable to upgrade to 8.0. I struggled with this for several months all the while unable to read pdf's on my laptop. Finally, in utter frustration I just reformatted. My computer is now clean and has no Adobe Reader. I want to put a good working version on my computer and am wondering which version should I use? My husband uses 5.0 and that suffices for his needs. I appreciate any input here.
