I am configuring Intel Core2Duo-based Macintoshes for a school district using OS X.4.8 and Adobe Reader v8.0.0. Our workstations have multiple users - some are full administrators, and some are subject to the operating system's parental control structure to provide security for students/teachers. Adobe Reader has been installed on the workstation with an administrative user, and all settings remain in their default state.

Users which are subject to parental controls are experiencing intermittant errors when launching Adobe Reader. Sometimes when the product is launched the red Adobe Reader window appears, then hangs after the first status line of "Installing/Fixing Installation..." with an error window that says "Adobe Reader could not install correctly. Adobe Reader was unable to install a necessary component and must quit."

What is strange is that this error does not appear all the time. It is almost a 50/50 split that the program will either show this error, or launch properly. I can launch/quit Adobe Reader multiple times and experience both states, seemingly at random. This error does not seem to appear to exist for Administrative users. It does not appear that ownership/permission rights are a direct issue, because sometimes the program will launch fine.

What is Adobe Reader attempting to do with "install/fixing installation" at every launch even though the program has been previously installed and launched?
