downloaded a pdf and clicked open and it opens in Word Pad

I have Windows Professional 2000 SP4. Gateway CPU 512MB Ram.
I pay my bills on line....I click on the link at the site to "download in pdf" it does........the grey diologe boxs shows up and reads "Open", "Save" or more info......I click on "open" and it opens it in "Word Pad". But if I save it to the desktop and then open my Adobe Reader and click on "open" it opens the file...........how do I change the default from WORD PAD to PDF ....I have Number 8 reader ......Thanks in advance
