how to detect reader plugin version?

One of the web sites I manage has a bunch of PDF files with version
requirements (e.g. work in Reader 6+). I know it's possible (in some
browsers) to detect the existence of the plugin, but is there a
javascript and/or VBscript method to detect the specific version, so
that if someone has (for example) Acrobat 4 plugin I can warn them and
display a download link?
