This message comes up every time I try to install Reader 9. I have removed the earlier version (8,x,x)via "remove programs", and I can not find a way to reinstall it. So now I am without any reader, - please help.

Some additional info:
I tried to open a PDF and then it opened. Using the help function I discovered it was 8.1.1. Using the help I tried to repair, - and during the repair process I got the same message as above.
Then I went into "remove software" and now the 8.1.1 was present. Trying to remove it showed the same error again.
Then I got a message about an update being available, - trying to install this (bringing me to 8.1.3) could not succeed although it did not tell me why.
So now I still have the 8.1.1 with nowhere to go to update it.

Try the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility ( <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/> ).

To get rid of 8.x
run the Windows Installer Cleanup tool (remove Adobe Reader 8.x)
reinstall Adobe Reader 8.x
