Hi.
At the begining of the year, we had two changes: first our company's
new style sheet imposed that we change the basic font of our documents
from helvetica to futura (lot of work and trouble), and then we
switched from Reader 5 to 7.
The documents we produce now are still "findable" using Reader 5, but
not with Reader 6 or 7, although we still can copy and paste text from
the PDF document to a text editor.
The PDFs are produced from PS files using ghostscript 8.54 with the
command:
  ps2pdf -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dFIXEDMEDIA -dDOPDFMARKS file.ps file.pdf
If you are willing to help me find out why the find function does not
work with newer versions of Reader, you can find a sample (4 pages) of
a PDF file along with the PS file used to produce it at:
  ftp://129.184.9.54/pub/yan/test_find/test_find.pdf
  ftp://129.184.9.54/pub/yan/test_find/test_find.ps
Many thanks in advance.
Yves

we switched from Reader 5 to 7.

The Search engine used in Acrobat 5 is different than the one in Acrobat 6 and later. This is probably the source of the difference.

Usually, adding tags to the PDF will improve the search results. in the case of your PDF file however, the accesibilty report returns the following:

      Accessibility

The checker found 2 font(s) missing information needed to determine the
characters that correspond to the symbols (glyphs) in the font.

The font "FuturaBook" has 31 unrecognizable glyphs out of 31 total glyphs.
The font "FuturaHeavy" has 13 unrecognizable glyphs out of 13 total glyphs.

So, I suspect the font is malformed beacuse even after adding tags, I'm still not getting any results. Where did you buy the font from?

although we still can copy and paste text from the PDF document to a text
      editor.

When I do this on the Mac, I get symbol characters instead of the actual text, so I suspect a font encoding problem

Try a different font, like Times, and see if you get the same results.

I consider the change in the search engine and the new behaviour towards the same document as a compatibility BUG !
I know damn well that Futura is a weird font, after all the time and efforts I had to spend to make it work in our editing environment.
But at least it still worked with Reader 5.
I would expect from Adobe that a document you could use with older versions of Reader would stay usable with newer versions!
Perhaps should I fill in a bug report?
Or at the lesat, I would like to know what is exactly causing trouble and how to work around the problem.
Ah! and yes, I've already tried with Helvetica, which works; I know the problem comes from the font; but this compatibility thing, I can't swallow...

One detail I forgot to mention: when you look for one character (I tried with the whole alphabet), Find works. Reader is therefore able to recognize the font...

It may be able to recogonize the font, or a character, but it can't recoginze a string of characters with this PDF.

There is a bug report form on the Contact Us link at the top of the page.
