Having downloaded 7.08 and attempted to install it, 7.08 fails to uninstall 7.05 with message Patch package missing.
Same thing happens using msiexec /x {product code}
or with uninstall commands in Install/uninstall Program Files.
Error 1714 also figures

This machine is Athlon 3000+ 1Gbyte Ram 180 Mbyte C:drive XP home revision 2 plus the latest explorer and microsoft patches.

I have my Acrobat Version 4 Showing in program files
Reader V5 Showing in program files, little content now
Reader V7 Showing in program files with several ENU folders
because of attempts to re-run the installation. The extra ENUs
can be deleted at will.

Do I have to wait for Version 8 before I can use Reader again do you
think?

Hi MarkATS

Having reviewed what was on the list, the option
install Msicuu was really all that was left to me.

It worked fine. It didn't appear on the desktop but
did appear in Programs: much safer.

Whilst Microsoft only approve it for XP Pro and
2000, It worked fine for XP home. I can see why
Microsoft are a tad nervous about mentioning
is use for XP home. There is a very long list
of Apps on my machine that could be uninstalled
by a user misop.

My version of 7.0.8 is unable to read files previously perfectly acceptable to Version 7.0.7 (Adobe call it progress: the file must have had errors!).

I've successfully gone back to my old version, & can now read the pdf file again,using:-

Start/Program Files/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore
... then select a checkpoint pre update to version 7.0.8
