Every time I try to open a desktop item I.E., Firefox, any shortcut or even my add/remove program in the control panel, an adobe reader window opens with a smaller window inside with an error message with the program I am trying to open, including trying to open Adobe reader to create a PDF file. To open any of these, I have to right click and click on the open button. The error message goes like this: Adobe Reader could not open (acrobat.com.exe) because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged, for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded. This error message will come up the same for everything th at I try to open, decktop shortcuts, whatever. How can I fix this problem? I have uninstalled and installed several times, getting the same results? Frank!!!

Uninstall Reader9. Try using the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Tool to removed all leftover entries in the registry. Then try to re-install. Mike

Do you actually use Acrobat.com (and/or Adobe AIR)? If not, uninstall the current version, also Acrobat.com and Adobe AIR, then download and install this version (without these components): <http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.0/enu/AdbeRdr90_en_US_Std.exe>

Mike, thank you, I uninstalled Reader 9 and all is back to normal, but I downloaded the cleanup tool and it wont open, it says: Widows clean up tool cannot be run, because you are either in the safe mode, which I am not, or Windows Installer is not correctly installed? Suggestions on how to install? Frank!!!

Frank, I think you have hit upon the problem. Your version of the Windows Installer tool. Many years ago I spent eons on the phone with Microsoft support. They tried many things to allow me to install Office. They showed me every trick in the book to get around all their copy protection schemes. I eventually got a higher tech support person who said the error message I was getting indicated I had to install the latest Windows installer, and then everything was fine. See if you can find an installer for the latest Windows installer. Mike

Pat, thanks for the help, I uninstalled and reinstalled without the other components, but when I try to open the reader, it asks for a program to run it and it requires Air, so I will try to download Air by itself and see what happens. Also I can't seem to get windows Installer to work on this computer, I'll have to see what I can find. Frank!!!

Ok, Pat and Mike, here is the deal, I have done everything that I can and am having the same problem, but here is the weird thing. There are two profiles, (users) on this P.C. the one one user can't open anything because of this problem, the other has no problem with opening everything and writing Pdf Docs? Have any Idea? Frank!!!

If creating a new user creates a user without the problem. I'd 86 the problemsome user and move everything over to the new user. Mike

As an administrator you can change the permissions for the two users desktops so that the admin can read and write. Just move them from one desktop to the other. Then change the permissions back to the way they were. Mike
