This may seem a pretty silly question, so forgive me in advance. I have Adobe Reader 8 installed on my computer, but I also have a suite of Acrobat 3.01 programs (Acrobat Catalog, Acrobat Distiller, Acrobat Exchange, Distiller Assistant, Register Acrobat and Uninstall Acrobat). Not sure where the latter came from. Distiller Assistant 3.01 always starts when my computer is started, and I don't know why. Is there any downside to simply uninstalling Acrobat 3.01? Does Acrobat 3.01 do anything that Adobe Reader does not? Thanks in advance for your help.

Acrobat is used to create PDF's. Reader is used to view/print PDF's. If you don't need to create PDF's then you don't need Acrobat (Distiller...etc). At any rate, it's a very old version of Acrobat and isn't up to any of the modern standards.
