When I try to install Reader 9.0 or Reader 9.1 onto a new Vista machine (using an administrative installation file (the machine isn't connected to the Internet) it returns the following error: Adobe Reader 9.0 - Setup Files in Use Some files that need to be updated are currently in use. The following applications are using files that need to be updated by this setup. Close these applications and click Retry to continue. Windows Explorer (Process Id: 3924) However, there aren't any Windows Explorer windows open. I guess it's complaining about the explorer.exe that looks after the taskbar etc., but I shouldn't really have to kill that explorer process. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Gary

I have a similar problem using Windows XP. I already have Adobe Reader 9.0 installed and am trying to install 9.1. I get the same error message, but there are no open programs identified. (The message says to close the applications, but does not list any.) I tried re-booting, then downloading and installing before opening any other applications, but that had no effect.

FWIW, I ended up biting the bullet and killing off the only listed Windows Explorer process. As I expected the desktop icons and the taskbar disappeared, but the installation continued successfully. You can then do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to start Task Manager and do File->Run and run explorer.exe to get the icons and the taskbar back, but personally. I'd rather reboot the computer. Not so much a fix as a work-around. Hope that helps. Gary
