Adobe Reader 9.0 hangs.

When I double click on a pdf file, Adobe reader 9.0 will hang(Not with every pdf, however). This pdf has Arial MS Unicode font embedded in it. However, if I drag this pdf file in an instance of Reader 9.0 or use File -> open, it will load just fine. Adobe 7.0 and Adobe 8.0 worked just fine in all the scenarios.

You can get it here
 <http://twop.gorodok.net/PDF.PDF>

After going nuts for some time, found that when I double click on that pdf file Reader 9.0 is trying to load this file CP949.TXT from "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Resource\TypeSupport\Unicode\Mappings\win" directory. Since that file is not present, reader hangs and gives me all kind of fingers. I found CP949.TXT on my machine in "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\TypeSpt\Unicode\Mappings\win" directory and once I copied that file to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Resource\TypeSupport\Unicode\Mappings\win" everything works just fine.

So the question is what changed?
Has Adobe acknowledged that this is an issue?
Is Adobe going to fix it?
Is Adobe going to give some details on why the behavior was changed from previous versions to 9.0?

I am thinking this is code page 949 related , so I am guessing it has to do something with Fonts. Right??

Did Adobe guys change the way fonts are loaded? or the specification changed on what should be written out for font information? Did something change with respect to to Font embedding??

Or you guys just forgot to put that and other CP*.TXT files in the installer??

Is there a workaround?? Is there any kind of resolution??

I don't know why the code page file was missing on your system; it probably got accidentally deleted.

In such cases the easiest way is to perform a repair install of Adobe Reader (from Add/Remove Programs).

Repair or uninstall/reinstall does not work.

Are you suggesting that this is Installer issue??

Have you tried it yourself??

Repair or uninstall/reinstall does not work.

Could you be more specific - what exactly happens? Does it not restore the missing file, or any other problem with repair/uninstall/reinstall?

I'm having the same problem on my computer (Lenovo X301, Vista SP1-NL) with the Dutch version of Reader 9. I can't find any CP949.TXT file on my computer however. The system just doesn't respond anymore if I try to open a specific PDF-file. The PDF-file opens normally on a XP-system with Reader 7.x.

As you suggested, I repaired from Add/Remove Programs.

Based on your response, I was expecting CP949.txt to show up in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Resource\TypeSupport\Unicode\Mappings\win folder, but it did not.

For shits and grins, I uninstalled and installed adobe 9 again. and that CP949.TXT was not in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Resource\TypeSupport\Unicode\Mappings\win folder.

Yep, that helps, but only once though. Next time I open a similar PDF my system hangs just the same...

Can you send me the pdf file? or provide a way for me to download it from somewhere? I can try to see what is going on.

I was able to open both the pdfs without any issues. Have you tried using process monitor to see where it hangs?

Problem persists. Taskmanager/process doen't give a clue. The system just completely freezes. What I did find out was:
- I can only see the downloaded CP949 and CP932.txt files when I click on "compatibility files" ("Compatibliteitsbestanden" in Dutch) in the explorer view
- when opening the CP949 or CP932.txt files, the carriage return on each line misses. When viewed on the internet, this is not the case.

I'll experiment some more...

Copying the CP-content from the internet into a new .txt file so it looks right, doesn't change anything.
