Ah, now I see what you're trying to do, I'm not so sure that the template soluton works. 

The point about the template is that it contains the paragraph styles that you want from the start. But if you don't know what they are at the start, then you indeed have to do the hard work in the script. 

But, since you're importing these styles (or seem to be) there does seem to be some place where the styles exist. Why can't that document serve as a template? 

Another lateral thought (which works if the target document starts out with no styles): 

Rather than import the styles in the manner you're doing it, why not, in the document that has the styles, create a story that has a paragraph with each style assigned to it (including character styles) and then copy and paste that into your target document? 

Seems to me that this would be a lot easier. The pasting will import all the styles, then you can delete the story and you're where you wanted to be.
