OK, tried Alan's suggestion of saving every n pages. Result: marginal improvement, if any. The SaveAs operation probably added as much processing time as it saved. Fact is, I can't see that the SaveAs made any difference, other than clearing the undo stack down to the last few pages. 

I presume that what we should have expected, if it was something to do with the undo stack, is that (given that each page is exactly the same format, requiring exactly the same number of operations) the time taken to create each page following a SaveAs would be exactly the same. Not so. As the book progresses, each page takes longer to process than the preceeding page --- SaveAs or no SaveAs. 

If you really want to speed things up, minimising ID is the answer: Twenty-five pages took me 40 secs when minimised against 105 secs with the ID displaying the pages. So it looks as though Ole's suggestion about screen redraw is the answer.
