Randy--

You *can* use OSA JavaScript (on the Mac OS) and JScript (in Windows), but the scripts end up looking very different. If you search the forum for JavaScript, you'll find a "hello world" example I did a bit ago.

You could probably use some flavor of Java, but I've never tried it. Several other folks are using Python (again, the forum has some example scripts) and Perl--but, again, the object references look totally different from platform to platform.

Cross platform scripting is something we're very interested in adding to InDesign (in addition to, not in place of platform-specific scripting standards), but we can't offer a timeline for its implementation (or, for that matter, any assurance that it will be implemented).

For now, I think the best thing to do is to resign yourself to writing a different script for each platform. Once you've worked out the program logic on one platform, it's not really too hard to implement on the other. At that point, you can optimize for the specific features of that language.

Thanks,

Ole
