I've used a combination of REALbasic and AppleScript to create a palette for ID 2 that was working to my complete satisfaction but now is on the blink.  

Here's how it looks when the current selection is an insertion point. In this case, it works properly: 

 

And here's the script that gets the class of the selection that I'm displaying (first 10 characters thereof) at the bottom of the palette: 

on run  with timeout of 1 second   try    tell application "InDesign 2.0.1"     set theClass to class of selection as list     if (count of theClass) > 1 then      return "multiple"     else      try       return characters 1 through 10 of (theClass as text) as string      on error       return theClass as text      end try     end if    end tell   on error    return "none"   end try  end timeout  return "Timed Out" end run 

This script runs on a timer that's set to repeat every 1250 milliseconds (hence the 1 second time-out).
