As I thought, when I'm running my script from within the compiled RB application, it is entirely embedded in the application and is divorced from the original AppleScript file. So, my opening that AppleScript and copying text from it could not have have corrected this behavior.

It occurs to me that I did do one other thing differently that might be a factor: On that last occasion, when it started working, rather than open a new document and draw just a text frame, as I had done previously, I first drew a rectangle, an oval and a polygon. When all three of these returned the correct result, I then drew the text frame and was shocked to discover that it was now reading correctly.

I guess I'll have to wait for it to go wrong again to explore this any further.
