Thx for your suggestions. I tried that, but the results were sloooo-o-o-w. I'm talking about "give a command then go make a mocha" slow. I'm working with ~3,000 entries, stretched over ~10 pages in 3 columns. Sadly, I'm working on a G3, and no prospect for an upgrade any time soon. 

I did turn off Optical Kerning, which seems to have speeded things up quite a bit. 

The other aspect is that I really want to learn how to script, and this seemed like a good time to learn ... but I feel like I've jumped into the deep-end of the pool. 

I don't have a background in programming (but my girlfriend does <grin>).  I've read the adobe guide on scripting, & ran some of the samples, but I still feel a little lost. I've studied the BoxCharacters.scpt  and understand some of it, but am confusted by some of it: what's the difference between index and horizontal offset? In the repeat section, is "myFoundItems" the plural of "myFoundItem", or a totally different variable? 

Like I said, I'm confused. Where is the best place to pick up more of the basics?
