I'm going to be writing some scripts which do some heavy calculations (determining paragraph heights by dropping them into a text frame & then checking where the insertion point ends up at. I need to do this for about 6000 records (ads), so I'm looking for whatever performance edge I can find. Here are the numbers I end up with after testing both in the VB6 IDE and running compiled code (results at the bottom). For each text, I run it with the active document displayed or minimized - I had a hunch that minimizing would improve performance, and it does - roughly a 40% improvement. Interestingly, running compiled code doesn't help that much - most likely because most of the time is spent in ID performing the calculations. Another interesting thing is that I tested this on a Sony VAIO laptop which I can toggle the CPU to either 700 or 850 MHz. There was no significant difference between the 2 settings! Either the toggling function is not really doing anything, or something weird is going on. I need to try this on a faster PC, I'm hoping for some linear improvement so that a 1.7 GHz PC would only take 1/2 as long, but I don't expect to see results that good. Anyway, for those doing some heavy calculations, minimizing the document window is a simple & worthwhile step to take. If anyone else has any other ideas to improve performance, I'd be interested in hearing about them. -- Greg ' timings: in IDE, @ 850 MHz, 500x: ' displayed - Seconds: 22.522 - per ad: 0.045 ' minimized - Seconds: 13.299 - per ad: 0.027 ' timings: compiled, @ 850 MHz, 500x: ' displayed - Seconds: 19.358 - per ad: 0.039 ' minimized - Seconds: 11.606 - per ad: 0.023
