For a directory I'm developing, I needed to have running heads that relate to the contents of the pages they head. So, I wrote the following script (with some help from Ole). 

Originally, I toyed with writing a general purpose script that would work with any document. But that proved to be troublesome, and being under deadline, I pulled back and produced a script that works for me. Still, I can see how the techniques might be useful for others, so here it is as I needed it. 

My document has one main story that snakes through many pages. On each page there are exactly two text frames from the story, so I took advantage of that in one of the repeat loops. The script only does the running heads on pages that are visited by the story in question. (In my case, that meant I had to do one head manually.) 

I used the technique of having a character style named for the paragraph style that contains the information I needed in the running head. The script is capable of being re-run; if the head on a page has already been released to the page, then the script picks this up rather than try to release it again (which would fail).
