margin preferences do not reflect whether a page is recto or verso (cs4)

Hello, all. I don't understand why in a script a page's
marginPreferences do not reflect that page's position (recto/verso).
If I loop through a document and print out each page's margins,
marginPreferences.left and marginPreferences.right stay the same, even
though the inner and outer margins are set differently! But if I
insert a page with different margins, they are reported for it as
expected.

I find this behaviour extremely annoying and see no point in it.
Besides, it forces one to write more unnecessary code.

Is it only because I'm missing something?!
