[JS] Is it possible to export without disk I/O?

I'm looking for a way to get an exported (story) text into a variable without creating a file on disk.

The text could be XML or Tagged text.

Is this possible in CS4? (I have found no way in CS3 other than to export and read the result file from disk).

Andreas

Is IDML disk export only, as well?

Or is there any way of retrieving a story text as XML or tagged text to memory (to a variable in ExtendScript JavaScript) without letting the data land on disk inbetween?

Does anyone know?

Hi Andreas,

You can only use the exportFile method to export to disk. But you're entirely free to use any tagging/markup scheme you want to put data into a text variable. Take a look at the ExportHTML.jsx example--it shows how to mark up text as HTML and write it to disk (without using exportFile), but instead of writing to disk, it could easily write the text into a variable.

Thanks,

Ole

Sorry, I was looking for a way to use one of the standardized formats of InDesign, without disk access, for exporting text and then importing it back. (Actually InDesign server, exposing the exported text through a web service, but the scripting language is the same, so it should not matter). To replicate the XML or tagged text export with script code would not be very appealing.

Kind regards,
Andreas
