Temporarily Revise Color Management Policy in Script

I am writing a script that will in part automatically read the color space in images. Although I usually set Color Management Policies > RGB to "Convert to Working RGB", for the purposes of this script I would like to be able to change this setting in code to "Preserve Embedded Profiles" (and similarly for CMYK and Gray). If I don't make this change, the property docRef.Mode is simply reported back as the converted mode rather than the actual mode in the unconverted image.

Is it possible to make this temporary Color Management Policy change within a script? Although I work with VB, an example in any language would be fine.

Thank you.
