Script for removing tabs?

I presume there should be a simple script to remove every second,
third etc tab between two words in an Word document or after importing it
in InDesign.
So finally only one TAB remains to make fields more easily.
Now I get delivered Word documents with to many (default) tabs which I have to
remove each time by hand. Not the kind of work I like very much. Can
anybody help me?
So instead of  WORD1 <tab> <tab> WORD2 <tab><tab><tab><tab> WORD3 I like to have:
WORD1 <tab> WORD2 <tab> WORD3
