Adobe is right on that subject, but not only for that reason. If you kern the dashes, adding space around it is useless. As a french typographer, I'm often annoyed with such sidebearings. In french typography, we always use dashes with spaces around, so if there are already built-in sidebearings to them, we obtain spaces greater than the rest of the line. :( I noticed the problem first with colon: our tradition is to put a space before it. We consider that the relation between phrase elements before and after it (a:b) is somehow identical to the equal relation (a=b). So the space is supposed to be identical before and after. But, with fonts designed in USA (even those of Adobe), with a greater left sidebearings, we obtain a space before greater than the space after (a:b), which is ugly and absurd. You could avoid problems in foreign countries by kerning those signs instead of adding useless sidebearings to them. I know it makes more work for you, but please try not to forgot there is a world around you. -- Olivier RANDIER -- Experluette mailto:orandier@fr.inter.net
