After more playing around with Noah last night, I figured out a few more things. To change the position of glyphs, you don't need to do the copying I earlier said (thought that will work). Once you've opened the pfb file, just rename the slots you want to change in the left-hand column. For example, rename the minus sign "plus minus" (or whatever the name the latter slot actually has) and vice versa using the "edit char string" item in the drop down edit menu, then save the pfb file. The go to font metrics editing mode, and save the pfm file. (You can only save the pfm file when in metrics mode, which was what I was missing before.) You should give the new font a distinguishing name so that you don't cause yourself problems further on with two identically named fonts. Then install and you're away. Because it's a native PS editor, you don't lose the hinting and other data that you do when using Fontographer or FontLab. (And it's free.)

Cheers, Dominic
