Not an American here! (Try New Zealander.) For book typography, not so many British names come to my mind, but the continent has produced a lot of great practitioners of the art, as has America.

I gather that, around the world, inches have traditionally been the unit of measurement in the printing industry, and owing to the force of tradition this continues to be the case, even in otherwise metric countries. ISO sizes are the obvious exception (which gives me another reason to hate them).

By the by, I saw a long discussion in another forum (a computing forum, I think) about using metric measurements for type. (Needless to say, there was already a bureaucratic document on the subject.) They all wanted points thrown out and replaced with millimetres or micrometres or some such. And they all wanted "point size" to reflect cap height of course. Long live points, I say.
