A couple of comments from my perspective. I agree that if I were using u&lc text I would use osf whenever available for the font, including the first character of a sentence, if that is how the figures fell (except if there is no budget and the client doesn't give a rat's, um, tail about typography -- you know -- a Times Roman Bold kinda guy).

With all caps, such as the title in question, I'd go with full height lining figures. But, I'd tighten up the letterspacing between the 1 and the 7.

An interesting dilemma pops up where the figures for a specific font fall shy of full cap height. Two choices: "stretch" the figures to optically match to caps, or set them a point size or two larger. Each method has advantages and disadvantages. The former method distorts the shapes and increases the thickness of serifs and crossbars; the latter makes the figures a tad to heavy.

I went through a similar kind of problem in designing logos out of model numbers for a new line of consumer products, which, as it turned out, were to be alphanumeric. I wound up using osf and truecut sc Centaur (Monotype), but I had to bounce the base alignment of the osf in a few logos for better appearance. Lots of headscratching on that project.

Neil
