Using forein characters

To create an a with a tick mark over it i press alt-e then the a. To create u with double tick mark: I press alt-sh-g (the double tick mark) then when i press the u key, the 2 characters do not combine as in the first axample. Can anyone help? what am i duing wrong? Thanks
