Thanks heaps for this, Arnis. I dug out my copy of FontMinder and converted a bunch of instances to Type 1s. And, like you say, the quality is fine. I don't think you lose the information you do when you open a font in Fontographer, say. The file sizes are comparable to normal Minion files, which they aren't if you do this operation in Fontographer. 

FM is still a great font manager! I had it open in W98SE and it worked fine and had heaps more options than many similar programs. I've been trialling FontReserve for Windows lately, and while I like some of its features (the font checking stuff, the sample sheets, the character map, the ability to export font files), I find I just prefer to use ATM Deluxe. I still use multiple masters a lot (as you may have guessed) and it's just a pain to have to create an instance in ATM and then switch to FR to manage the other fonts. And ATM Deluxe is just so easy to use (FR certainly isn't hard, but it's not as quick to create sets in and add fonts as ATM). And FR doesn't show up MM instances, and the character map shows only the standard 256 ISO slots, even when you select an OpenType font. But an updated FM would be the best. (FontNavigator was just too stripped down to really qualify.)
