I don't think I have ever met a Swiss, German, French, Dutch, Polish or
Russian designer who works in inches. I think your assumption may only apply
for English-speaking countries.

In Germany and Poland, the designers used to use Didot points (for type) and
milimeters, but nowadays, they usually use Picas (for type) and milimeters.

As for font recognition, I used to memorize tons of fonts, but nowadays, I
mostly use http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/ (online) or
http://www.fontexpert.de/ (the CD-ROM version). I sometimes browse through
the more "fancy" printed catalogues such as Font Bureau, FontFont or House
Industries. Major font vendors mostly have rather boring printed specimens,
so they're no fun to browse.
