Well, no one said Bringhurst doesn't make mistakes, though the way his book is referred to in some discussions makes you think it's the only book on typography there is! I like the book, but I baulk at some of his suggestions.

As for em rules as dashes, it's not my choice. Aesthetically, I find them too long for the purpose and they appear to join words even when used with thin spaces, whereas I believe a dash should "break" the text. I've also seen them used with normal word spaces on either side, and I particularly dislike that practice.

As for joining them up, I have cause to do this in bibliographies, and I prefer them to be full width. As Peter says, Minion is a problem in this regard.

While we're (sort of) on the subject of spacing, I'll segue to ellipses. I find the ellipses in many fonts too tightly spaced (I prefer to make my own), and I was wondering whether others here also found this. I'm not asking for quotations from the "Chicago Manual" or other sources on 3-to-em or 4-to-em spaces or some author's supposed "correct" spacing, but am interested in actual practice: do you create your own or use the font ellipses?

Cheers, Dominic
