First let me reply to Royce's post:

you need to get InDesign 1.5 ME (Middle Eastern) to get Hebrew to work. InDesign 2 ME isn't out yet. Purchase of ID 1.5 ME entitles you to a free upgrade to ID 2 ME and a free copy of ID 2 regular but unfortunately it doesn't work the other way round.

you can order from www.karatsoft.co.il or get in touch with Shlomit Heymann on Shlomit@karat.co.il.

Regarding Neil Keller's question: I have advanced alot since making the post and at this point I am trying to understand the way that ligatures work in Hebrew. I notice that all consonents with a dagesh (dot in the middle) have a ligature as do certain letters such as the the shin, sin, lamed. What is also interesting is that the alef-kamatz and alef-patach (yiddish I presume) combinations have ligatures. As well as the alef-lamed. What I would like to do is create a ligature with certain consonent-vowel combinations in particular the resh and all it's lower vowels. I know that altering the kerning values would be the solution to this, but unfortunately for some reason InDesign 1.5 ME ignores the kerning values in a right-to-left situation (in English too!)

This is actually a better way of positioning the vowels because certain publishing houses use spaced out words instead of italics (since italics don't really exist in Hebrew). Kerning wouldn't work for this situation (at least it doesn't work with PageMaker properly.)
