Marilyn,

I apologize if I grabbed onto the wrong part of your message. I thought you were saying that things used to be easy in terms of technical compatibility and measurement systems. Having once investigated how many different point systems there have been, I took exception to what I thought you were saying.

I will also be the first to say that you clearly know a lot about DTP and design.

Having said that, I hope you don't mind if I expand on something you said?

On the "crappy fonts" subject.... Even a century ago, there were quite a few crappy fonts. But I'll be the first to say that they were not *as* crappy as today's crappy fonts, since there were technical and financial barriers to font design and production that meant that not just anyone could easily make a font. Actually, considering the barriers, it's impressive how many bad fonts they had then! :)

Cheers,

T
