How to save something as a style?

Hi. I may be in the wrong place, but oh well. I can't seem to figure out how to make a new style. I am able to make a blank one, but then I do not know how to customize it. For example, if I wanted to make a chrome-looking style, I would know how to create a chrome layer, but then how do I save it as a style.

I'm probably way off here, but some help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
