Regardless of modem type. depends upon in the case of POTS line how good the connection and wiring between your house and the main terminal.

In cae of DSL that still phone based, still determined by conditions between you location and the Phone terminal location. Another factor is their is a Finite limit as to how far from switching and your location. If your next door to switching station then you get maximum throughput. where if your 17,000 feet away from a switching terminal then you don't qualify to get DSL. (even if one foot over the limit).

Cable while there is no loss from switching and connections because signal is re amplified every so many feet. The speed attained depends upon the load. if the load from where you are back to amplifier is heavy, as more people get on you speed will drop 10-12mb down to as little as 2 mb. And upload they only guarantee less than 1mb usually 756KB

The New FOIS system is mostly unavailable other than the most advanced areas. New York, California, maybe Florida, DC. Most places it is unavailable. and the most expensive. But has the advantages of having virtually no loss. And attain high through put speeds both up and download.

I have 1 MB DSL Up/Down. and I can tell you that yesterday the best Throughput I could get was 920KB when downloading the Trial version of Illustrator Yesterday. I am reminded of trying to download 20mb files on my old US Robotics 56K modem several years ago.
