sIFR - what does everyone think of it?

Does anyone know about sIFR, have any experience with it, and if so, what are your thoughts? Is it safe to use? I generally stay away brand new technologies that might fall apart in different browsers, but how is sIFR? It's been around for a while, so can I use it?

It is based on Flash, and very few people don't have a Flash plugin on their system. A very few Flash haters might have removed it, but I think that there is a fallback (TR or something) that leaves the page viewable. I do know that it is preferable in that the text is searchable by search engines. A caveat ... it is only for display elements ... don't try to use it for blocks of text. I would rate it above using a GIF file to get a custom and unusual typeface in a heading or subheads. A page that uses it is <http://typophile.com/forums>

Cool, thanks Don. I wouldn't dream of using it for a large block of text, but seems great for headers, and searchable too? awesome!

Wow, thanks Murray, I figured you'd swoop in with something like that. And I didn't think you'd be a big fan. Is there a reason for the inline styles? Or can I use these styles in a linked CSS file? Also, on that note.. I know that one aspect of good SEO is using proper tags, IE, h1 tags, h2 tags, p tags, etc.. Does the meta information still factor in? Or is it kinda obsolete and pointless these days? Thanks again!

Seems OK for limited use. But I'd use a different technique. Consider <h1>words words words</h1> and you want those words to appear in some unusual font. Create a graphic using that font and modify your code as follows - <h1><img src="yergraphic.jpg">words words words</h1> Then start spinning the magic - <h1 style="position:relative;overflow:hidden;width:wwwpx;height:hhhpx"><img src="yergraphic.jpg" style="position absolute">words words words</h1> As soon as you make the image have position absolute, it is removed from the flow, and will rise above the words, completely obscuring them. Since overflow is hidden on the container, even if the text is resized, it won't peek out from under the graphic. You can read more about this here - http://www.tjkdesign.com/articles/tip.asp -- Murray

Inline styles are fine (and ideal) if they are unique to just one element on a page (as noted in Murray's example for yergraphic.jpg). If there are several instances of the same graphic/h1 header, then there would be economy in defining the style in the <:head> or a linked CSS file.

Last I have heard is that meta information is generally ignored by search engines these days. Now most rankings are based on links to your page, and other factors.

Jim, yeah, I was thinking I'd probably use the technique throughout the site, so I'd define it in a linked CSS file. But Murray probably did that for ease of explanation I'm guessing. Don, yeah that's what I've been hearing too, just wanted to confirm.

The description one is useful though, Google will often display it below your link in search results.
