Hello, I've been reviewing web stats for my site and have come across some interesting findings. Firstly, I'm wondering if page requests are from robots or people??? I can sort of tell by the stats, but I'm wondering what percentage of hits come from bots.... is there a general rule about that? a general number? Also, looking at sites that are supposedly linking to mine, I found two porn sites, a nederland search engine, and other wierd ones. what gives? Why are these sites linking to mine and how did they find me? Thanks in advance, Stan

Google or perhaps Yahoo would be a good place to start. I have a Family Tree website. And it and practically every comment I've ever made on any newsgroup, these groups - anything - is listed on either Google or Yahoo. Both swear the information can't be used either by Harvesters, but who knows. How I found out my niece in James Madison University Typed my name and found pages and pages of my comments over the years. I would like to see the entire internet go through a system where you have to use a User name and password even on NNTP Groups, (use Authentication). That would kill a lot of this stuff.

You apparently have a small site if you are able to notice these statistics. Use your server's site statistics or Google Analytics... but if you want a real analysis of who is coming to your site, look only to your sales (if the site sells something) or user registrations. By offering premium content to registered users, you develop a relationship that you can certainly track. There is so much noise in the log you are looking at now that there is no point in reasoning how anyone has linked to you. That is just the nature of the internet.

The odd sites that seem to be linking to you might actually not be. Visit the site and check the code. My bet is that you will not find your URL. This happens when the sites "cloak" their content. This allows search engines to see content different from when humans see. It can certainly affect the rankings of your site. But there is not too much you can do about it. If the problem does not scale up tremendously, just ignore it.
