Hello again everyone,

I'm in a bit of a pickle.....

My company had ANOTHER round of layoffs last Monday... and cut everyone's salary another 10%. On top of that, they cut us down to 4 days a week which is essentially a 30% cut.

So I'm job hunting and desperate. Some questions for you.

1. What's a good way to negotiate on salary?
2. I had two interviews this week. The first one will pay me over what I am making on 4 days a week, but less than my full-time salary even after the 10% reduction. But there is a lot I can learn from this company and possibly grow and make more money in the future. 20 people, bonus structure, etc.
3. The interview I had today. It's 7 people out of a duplex. They say they've been around 10 years and I met the CEO's wife, she has a fat ring, so they must be doing well. They don't seem like con artists, but I'm a little iffy about it. They will pay me closer to what I want, but I have no one I can learn from there.

Let's discuss, what do you all think?

Stan

Stan,

Keep swimming upstream, and you will end up higher.

I believe negotiating salary is more than a bit difficult, especially starting at a new place, employed or not. And the present circumstances form the perfect excuse for wage cuttings and layoffs at any time.

Learning is good, and you may feel lonely if you are just on your own.

You need a firm swimming upstream.

4. You don't. You take what you can get, continue to learn and build your resume and contacts, and then move up when things are better and you are not so desperate for a job.

I would go with #2. The fat ring in #3 means they are doing well, not their employees. They might even be doing well by screwing people. The duplex might be a rental, and you might come in to work on a Monday to find it empty, and no one to contact for several weeks pay.

Don, as I, would go with the first one, mentioned in #2.
