index.dat est-il un virus ?

Le fichier index.dat se promenne sur plusieurs de mes r�pertoires
(windows\fichiers internet temp\, windows\cookies, windows\historique ...)
Ce fichier n'apparait pas avec l'explorateur windows mais avec la commande
dir d'ms dos.
de plus sous ms dos je ne peux pas l'effacer ni avec rd ni avec del.
s'agit-il d'un fichier syst�me prot�g� ou des cons�quenses d'un virus ?
