In short, we are NOT running short on bandwidth. In fact, I often > get the maximum transfer rate on my modem (28.8). I am sure that Gregory Wood is accurate in his statements above, but due to a couple of factors, I would like to set the record straight on Athens, Isp (which is not AthensNET i.e., athensnet.com, but simply athens.net). This is not a rebuttal to his statements just additional information disclosed to the public about local ISPs. I am, by the way, an employee of Athens ISP. Just for the record, Athens' Isp uses the following setup: A full T-1 from Sprintlink. Statistics on the saturation level of this connection are public domain information. Our connection was not a full T-1 as the infomation above indicates when we started business. However, it is a full T-1 now and our customers and the curious can view stats on our link at http://www.athens.net/restricted/utils/apollo.cgi You can see other various network connectivity diagnostics, like ping and traceroute from our server also, at http://www.athens.net/restricted/utils/ We are considering MCI, UUnet, and BBNplanet for our second T-1, tentatively due in the next 210 days. This web page will also show stats on our modem utilization based on percentage. Our dial up infrastructure is based exclusively on the Ascend Max switch which can handle 33.6K modem connections, 64K ISDN & 128K ISDN, and Frame-relay connections for us. Our phone lines are delivered as Primary Rate ISDN (PRI 64K/channel, not channelized T-1 robbed-bit 56K/channel). We did not originally use the Ascend equipment, before we upgraded to it we used US Robotics Total Control V. Everything, Hayes Century Rack Modems, and we tried other equipment. At that time our phone lines were delivered as analog lines. Our services are spread out over three main Unix servers and one Windows NT server. The Unix servers we have are one BSDI server and two R5000 Silicon Graphics workstations. I hope that this information will help dispell any misconceptions about Athens ISP, especially about the name versus domain name situation with Athens ISP (http://www.athens.net) and AthensNET (http://www.athensnet.com). -- Jim Freeman Athens ISP - Systems Administrator <snip> > Gregory Wood > Technical Support - NorthEast Georgia Internet Access
