I am having some troubles with my linux. After trying several distro's I finally found one that would install. It boots up nicely(although a little slow but faster then windows) KDe fires up ok. The problems are as follows. 1. I can only get video in 640x480 16 color. As you can imagine that just plain sucks. My monitor only works at a 60Hz refresh so that is a problem. I have tried setup and x86config but it doesn't work. The drivers are the correct ones. I have a trident 3DImage 4meg 9850. AGP 1x. 2. I can only log into my ISP when logged into the machine as root. This causes problems especially on IRC, I am using Kppp. When logged in as user, Kppp dials in connects then says starting pppd, a few seconds later an error box pops up that says pppd died unexpectedly. When logged into my machine as root it works fine, but then I have problems with networks and such online they don't want me logged onto my machine as root. 3. I cannot get xfce to load. I have edited xinitrc and such as directed by others I have tried exec xfce, exec gnome everything nothing works it is really starting to annoy me. Startxfce also doesn't work. No matter what gets edited startx keeps firing up KDE. I realize KDE is a good desktop enviroment but I would like to have the option. As per instructions I unzipped it and such. I was told something like make make install but it tells me make doesn't exist. 4. This may sound ignorant but I cannot figure out how to install anything. I am a tech and have been for years but I have no experience whatsoever with linux. I have tried linuxdocs.org and linuxnewbies.org and while they say it is for new linux users the help and howto's are written for admins and those who know their way around linux even on linuxnewbies.org. The IRC channels are of little to no help they just ridicule and laugh. It is people like them who keep microsoft in power, if there is no source to learn the most basic things in linux, if you keep taking for granted that people know certain things about linux already then linux will never get off the ground. Things need to be written in english and step by step blows. As if someone had never even seen a computer before and needs to learn how to use linux, thats how this newbie stuff needs to be written. Of course that is just my opinion and alot of people disagree. 5. I downloaded the drivers for my soundcard but have no clue how to install them the instructions from the web site are no help. I have a trident 4DWaveDX I got the drivers from alsa-projects.org. Thanks in advance for any help someone might be able to give me. My system specs are as follows. Windows98se on the 6.4Gig hd which is partitioned into two drives. CDRom on hdb Linux on hdc1 Blank hard drive on hdd2(this one is formatted with windows format command. Curiously enough Linux see's this drive but not the two partitions on the primary slave.) Peanut Linux version 8.2 with Kernel version 2.2.18 Lite on CDRom 42x AMD K6-2 350 overclocked to 400(extra cooling and it runs stable) 128Megs of pc100ram FIC VA503+ motherboard with 1 meg of onboard cache. I have L1, L2, and L3 cache ram(AMD supports all three levels not intel) VIA Apollo chipset and AMI Bios with the latest bios flash. Jaton Modulator V.90 modem PnP or legacy is configurable for both. KFlex base technology. Will emulate and connect to X2 however. Digital or analog. -- Fantacmet@ipns.com Fantacmet@yahoo.com Fantacmet.tripod.com/main If ignorance is bliss then why aren't more people happy?
