L.S.
I am developing a Windows application. Its purpose in a far future should
be to give pupils
on second/high school level the opportunity to exactly:
1. expand and factorize formula's (pure algebraic formulas and a graphical
way of input are
"allready" operational);
2. solve all kinds of equations;
3. differentiate (and in the long term its inverse) all kinds of formulas,
4. in the same long term the above inverse also including boundaries and
maybe
5. to solve exactly a few differential equations;
At the moment is absolute nothing completely ready, but I finished some
expansion,
factorization, equation solving and differentiating. I am not intending to
be a competitor of
Mathematica, because my software excels in being prone to bugs and
amateuristic mathematical
methods: my software should be able to explain the pupil the program's
methods in means and
knowledge available to a moderate pupil. The development is showing all the
characteristics of
an agony. First because of the restrictions my person imposes on the process
and secondly
because of my decision for the operating system. Sorry, twice the same
reason! All I have done
sofar concerning the operating system has been using the Win32 Api's and
certainly no
MFC-classes. I have read "Beginning Linux Programming" (Wrox, 1) of Neil
Matthew and Richard
Stones and I am reading X Window Programming from Scratch (Que, 2) and
Professional Linux
Programming (Wrox, 3). In (2) it reads on page 118, that there should be
packages of all kinds
of application development, even integrated development environments
(IDE's). But everything I
read consists of makefiles and gcc-commands! Perhaps now becomes clear, what
I like to ask
you: Can you name me a few of those IDE's preferably allowing for OSF Motif
and where to order
them? If they exist at least! Or do I have to go for a Sun workstation? For
me the most
important parts of an IDE are the editor, the compiler and the debugger.I
realize, that I have
to rebuild my application from the start and I am aware of the fact, that
could cost me a few
years and I even am prepared to invest the effort. However, I haven't yet
taken my decision,
but I certainly will continue writing in C++ and without an appropiate Linux
IDE I will be
forced to continue in my own, old way under Microsoft Windows.
