Hi Chris,

You haven't specified what type of modem you are using.
It helps to know what type of modem, as there are many reasons why it may
not work. If you have an Internal PCI modem, chances are it is a type of
modem called a 'WinModem' - Ie: they only work for windows.

These modems are usually pretty horrible, and I'd dump it straight away
for a nice external modem. Although you may want to try
www.lindrivers.com for some WinModem drivers for Linux, you may get
lucky.

If you're using a hardware based modem, ie: an internal ISA or nice
external serial port based modem, check that you've set it up to use the
right serial port:

In Windows you will be used to COM1, COM2 etc:

Windows/DOS LINUX
COM1 /dev/ttyS0
COM2 /dev/ttyS1
etc...

For example, if your modem was sitting on COM2, you would issue the
following as root:

# cd /dev
# rm modem
# ln -s /dev/ttyS1 /dev/modem

what you're doing there is you're changing into the dir that holds all
your devices, basically.

Then you're removing the current "shortcut" or symbolic link to the
device 'modem'

Finally, you are making a new "shortcut" called modem (in place of the
old one), this shortcut points to /dev/ttyS1 (COM2).

There you go. If you've got a WinModem, you probably won't have much
luck, otherwise, just set up and go.

If you have KDE installed on your Linux box, try running kppp and
setting things up from there, it may be easier!

Hope it helps, and please ignore the unhelpful people who post things
saying RTFM! - People like that should not post anything if they can't be
bothered helping out.

Al.
